If you love natural elements, cozy fabrics, muted colors, and having a clutter-free home, Scandinavian Design styles may be up your alley! This design style is at the forefront of one of my favorite projects to date–a main level renovation partnership with Lecy Bros. Construction. We added in some unexpected, almost-industrial elements to the design to fit the client’s more modern leaning Scandinavian aesthetic. I’m sharing the most common elements in this trendy, yet timeless, design style.
- Wood and more wood! Light toned woods on everything from flooring to furniture to mantles and beams.
- Minimalism over Minimalism. Clean lines are seen throughout Scandinavian design with very little ornate details. Less is more. Each piece selected is fairly simple, but beautiful!
- Coziness to the max! I’m sure you are sick of the work “hygee” by now, but this is what Scandinavian design is all about. Think high quality furniture that you sink into, sheepskins and hides, chunky blankets, seating by the fire, all the good stuff 🙂
- Plants everywhere! Thank God this client has a green thumb and we were able to easily work in all of their amazing plants into the design. Bringing the outdoors in is a huge component of this design style. What better way to do that than plants?!
- Natural light. This design style does not work well in rooms with little natural light. You’ll want lots of large windows and a great view doesn’t hurt either! Scandinavian design typically doesn’t include draperies, so simple pull-down window treatments were used for privacy.
- Muted colors inspired by nature. You’re not going to see reds or purples in this design style. Instead, muted colors inspired by the earth’s elements are used. Blues, greens, creams, whites, and tans. As always, you’ll want to add in several materials and textures throughout to add interest.
