Are you team rug or no rug under a dining table?

90% of the time, I think having a rug under the table is best! Sometimes clients don’t want to deal with the potential mess from food on the rug. Sometimes a rug will eat into the walkway(like in this room!) so it’s best to go without. If you do want to go rugless, I recommend meeting all of the following criteria:
-The table and flooring should be be complimentary in color hue, but in contrasting tones. For example, if you have floors that are a cooler grey, you can’t put a warm walnut table in there. You can do a similar shade of grey with a rug to break it up, or you can do a darker grey or black table directly on your floors.
-You need to have some upholstery or leather on the chairs/seating. If you have a wood table and wood chairs on wood floor, it is going to be too one-note and sterile feeling. I opt for all upholstered chairs to warm it up a bit, but you could also do upholstered head chairs and wooden side chairs. There are some amazing performance fabrics out there so don’t let fabric scare you away!
-You should be okay with a more causal look. If you’re going for a more relaxed look, then you could go rugless! If you have a crystal chandelier and want a polished look, you need a rug.

The dining space in this photo was from a recent Edina refresh I completed last month. This was an unused formal dining room that was also being overtaken by kids’ toys 😅 we turned it into a multi-purpose dining space with a less-formal dining set, little sitting nook for morning coffee, and put the clients upright piano in here as well. A beautiful rattan light fixture just got installed(pic to come of that!) The client is super excited for her Thanksgiving in this newly designed room 🧡
